Feeble Little Horse pivots to digital glitch on new album bitknot
The 25-minute LP integrates digital artefacts into core arrangements, marking a distinct evolution from the band’s previous shoegaze-heavy output.

Feeble Little Horse has released bitknot, a 25-minute album that signals a decisive departure from the project’s earlier ’90s indie rock and shoegaze influences. Led by Lydia Slocum, the new record embraces a modern, digital aesthetic, positioning glitchiness and hyperpop elements as integral components of the songwriting rather than superficial production effects. The album is now available on Bandcamp and major streaming platforms including Spotify, Apple Music, and Qobuz.
This stylistic shift follows the release of the sophomore record Girl with Fish, which drew heavily on blown-out textures and retro rock conventions. On bitknot, the distortion carries a sharper, more contemporary edge, while the riffs are notably cleaner. The digital artefacts that once served as window dressing are now woven into the structural arrangements, creating a distinct sonic identity that moves away from the "maximalist indie rock" label previously applied to the band.
The new direction was previewed by the single "This Is Real," a track described as a chaotic fusion of blast beats, pitch-shifted vocals, and Sonic Youth-esque guitar melodies. The full album refines this approach, offering a more structured exploration of digital weirdness. The opener, "Doorway," begins with feedback and guitar stabs before settling into melodic microloops and programmed drums, eventually collapsing into an outro defined by beat repeats and vocal stutters.
Track-specific arrangements highlight the project’s engagement with digital culture and low-fidelity aesthetics. "Rewind" combines college rock guitar with bird recordings and synth koto patches, while "Shady" pairs low-quality MP3 guitar samples with drum loops reminiscent of late-1990s computer music software. The closer, "DMT," features digital sparkles and heavy riffs, reinforcing the album’s commitment to a raw, digitally-mediated sound.
Slocum’s lyrical content ranges from the sentimental to the disaffected, with moments of humour interspersed throughout. The album concludes with "Guts," which utilises chopped-up vocals as a lead melodic instrument, and "Shopping," which features a siren-like guitar line bathed in low-bit noise. bitknot is available now across Bandcamp, Deezer, YouTube Music, and major streaming services.
