Fashanu’s protection struggles compound Jets’ line problems
The left tackle was credited with three sacks and six pressures allowed in the Week 3 loss to Detroit, while Geno Smith was sacked five times.
The New York Jets’ protection faltered in their Week 3 defeat to the Detroit Lions, with left tackle Olu Fashanu among those credited with giving up pressure. Pro Football Focus attributed three sacks and six pressures to Fashanu.
Quarterback Geno Smith was sacked five times. Next Gen Stats credited the Jets’ starting offensive line with 19 pressures in the game, indicating problems across the unit.
Fashanu said his performance “wasn’t good enough” and that his job was to keep Smith upright. He said he would review the film, identify his mistakes and work to improve.
The Yahoo Sports report, citing TruMedia, said Fashanu had been charged with four sacks this season on 127 pass-blocking reps. It compared that with six sacks allowed across 634 pass-blocking snaps last season.
The report also said Josh Myers and Joe Tippmann were each assigned one sack, while running back Braelon Allen struggled in pass protection. The figures point to a broader protection issue for the Jets as they seek to address the problems exposed against Detroit.
