FAMU Rattlers secure historic SWAC softball title and NCAA berth with walkoff win

Florida A&M University softball defeated Southern 2-1 in a walkoff victory on Saturday, 9 May, to claim the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament championship. The decisive moment occurred in the bottom of the seventh inning when Braxtyn Battle singled to left field, advancing Samantha Smith who subsequently scored Kiara Beltre to seal the game.
This triumph represents the Rattlers' first SWAC title since the university joined the league in 2021. Prior to this result, FAMU had appeared in the last two SWAC Tournament championship rounds but was defeated both times by Jackson State, making this victory a significant institutional milestone.
The game was played at the university's home venue, known as "The Highest of Seven Hills," in a winner-takes-all format that determined the conference representative for the NCAA Tournament. By securing the championship, FAMU has now guaranteed their place in the subsequent national stage of competition.
Statistical analysis of the match indicates that FAMU out-hit Southern 7-2 during the contest. Kiara Beltre led the team with two hits, while Samantha Smith anchored the defence by pitching the entire seven innings to earn the win.
