Facebook Launches Dedicated Seller App and Free Verification System
The standalone 'Seller' application and 'Facebook Verified' initiative mark the latest moves by the social media giant to stem user losses and emulate successful features from rival platforms.

Facebook has introduced a standalone application named 'Seller' designed for frequent Marketplace users to manage listings, communicate with buyers, and track item performance. The company also introduced a free verification service, 'Facebook Verified', which utilises selfie authentication to display a check mark within a white circle on user profiles across Facebook Dating, Marketplace, and Groups. This free tier is distinct from the paid 'Meta Verified' subscription, which offers a blue badge and other premium features.
Facebook Marketplace currently processes more than 430 million monthly listings and serves over 1.1 billion active users, contributing significantly to the platform's engagement among younger demographics. To sustain this momentum, the new 'Seller' app allows users to handle sales-related tasks separately from the main application. The company has indicated plans to integrate artificial intelligence into the 'Seller' app to assist users with automating tasks, such as writing item descriptions and searching groups for answers.
The introduction of the free verification system is positioned as a countermeasure against AI scams and a method to prove human authenticity on the platform. The verification mark is specifically a check mark within a white circle, contrasting with the blue badge associated with paid subscriptions. This initiative aims to build trust within the ecosystem as the company continues to expand its digital infrastructure.
In addition to commerce and verification tools, Facebook is testing an optional full-screen immersive video view for its main application. This update will initially be rolled out to "video-heavy" international markets, with a plan to reach the US next year. Users have the option to disable the immersive video view and revert to the standard feed-based interface, a feature similar to tests conducted with Instagram in several markets.
These updates form part of Meta’s broader strategy to emulate successful features from rival platforms, such as Reels and dedicated community tools, to stem user losses. The company has recently expanded its app portfolio, including the launch of 'Forum', a Reddit-like application for Facebook Groups, in May, and 'Pocket', a vibe-coding app, earlier this month. The introduction of dedicated tools for sellers and community managers reflects Meta's efforts to adapt to shifting user behaviours and competitive pressures.
