ESPN maps 34 games shaping college football’s 2026 opening week
ESPN’s Week 1 preview highlights one ranked-versus-ranked clash, major coaching changes and the uncertainty surrounding rebuilt teams.
ESPN has previewed 34 games for Week 1 of the 2026 college football season, framing the opening slate around team transitions, transfer movement and the first tests for new coaching staffs. The preview includes major fixtures across the top division, as well as FCS and Division III match-ups.
No. 24 Louisville v No. 9 Ole Miss is identified as the weekend’s highest-ranked game and the only ranked-versus-ranked contest cited in the preview. ESPN’s analysis focuses on whether Ole Miss can maintain an elite offence under a new coaching structure and whether Louisville’s reshaped lines and receiving corps can support quarterback Lincoln Kienholz.
Other prominent games include No. 7 Miami at Stanford, Boise State at No. 2 Oregon, No. 5 Texas v Texas State and No. 11 LSU v Clemson. Wisconsin v No. 4 Notre Dame and No. 19 SMU at Florida State are scheduled for Sunday and Monday respectively, extending the opening-week schedule beyond the main Saturday programme.
The preview also examines how new personnel may affect established programmes. Texas retains quarterback Arch Manning and receiver Ryan Wingo while adding transfers, while Florida State enters its meeting with SMU after retaining coach Mike Norvell despite a 7-17 record over the previous two seasons. SMU, meanwhile, has replaced both coordinators and remodelled several position groups.
ESPN includes betting lines, SP+ and FPI projections, and assessments of potential upsets. Its analysis gives an 86 per cent chance that at least one of Tarleton State, Rhode Island, South Dakota State or Idaho State will defeat an FBS opponent, while also highlighting top-level FCS and Division III fixtures. The projected outcomes remain forecasts, with several teams relying on untested players and rebuilt line-ups.
