Front office analysis suggests major roster overhauls involving Ja Morant, Luka Doncic, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander

ESPN NBA insiders Ben Golliver, Zach Kram, and Andre Snellings, alongside front office expert Bobby Marks, have published six speculative trade proposals for the 2026 NBA offseason. The scenarios involve high-profile players including Ja Morant, Luka Doncic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Kyrie Irving. The analysis considers financial implications, roster construction, and the impact of new team leadership, such as the Mavericks' overhaul under Masai Ujiri.

One proposed move involves the Dallas Mavericks trading Deni Gafford to the Los Angeles Lakers. This deal would see the Lakers acquire a proven pick-and-roll partner and rim-running threat to complement Luka Doncic. For Dallas, the move aligns with a broader strategy to pivot toward youth and draft capital, potentially clearing future cap space while acquiring assets like Jarred Vanderbilt. Marks notes that the Lakers would not lose cap flexibility, as the outgoing salaries are nearly identical to Gafford’s current contract.

Financial pressures on the Oklahoma City Thunder are also central to the speculation. With a projected payroll explosion due to rookie extensions for Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams, the Thunder face the risk of entering the second apron. One scenario suggests sending Amen Williams to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for Michael Porter Jr. and multiple future first-round picks. This would allow Oklahoma City to retain its core while stockpiling assets, mirroring past strategic moves by general manager Sam Presti.

The Memphis Grizzlies are reportedly looking to complete a retooling effort by moving Ja Morant. One proposal sends Morant to the Phoenix Suns, who would install him as the primary point guard. In return, Memphis would receive veterans Grayson Allen and Royce O’Neale, whose movable contracts help the Grizzlies save salary and increase their future second-round pick inventory. This move would allow Memphis to orient its franchise around its upcoming draft selections.

Kyrie Irving’s potential availability due to injury and contract status has also drawn attention. A proposal suggests the Detroit Pistons acquiring Irving from Dallas in exchange for Isaiah Stewart, Caris LeVert, Ron Holland, and a first-round pick. This would provide Detroit with a secondary scorer to pair with Cade Cunningham, while Dallas could integrate Irving into its new regime under Ujiri, who has previously expressed interest in the guard’s fit within the program.

Another scenario involves the Philadelphia 76ers acquiring Tobias George from the Detroit Pistons. This trade would provide the 76ers with wing shooting and depth, while Detroit receives a first-round pick to mitigate the risk of taking on George’s contract. Marks suggests that swapping the first-round pick for future second-rounders might better suit Philadelphia’s asset management, given their existing draft obligations.

The collective analysis highlights a league in transition, where financial aprons and leadership changes are driving aggressive roster construction. From the Mavericks’ youth movement to the Thunder’s salary cap management, these proposals underscore the complex calculations front offices must make as the 2026 offseason approaches.
