ESPN analysts project Texans and Lions dominance in 2026 NFL preview
With the season opener 100 days away, ESPN’s comprehensive report highlights roster overhauls, injury recoveries, and bold predictions for the upcoming campaign.

ESPN has released a comprehensive early preview for the 2026 NFL season, marking 100 days until the regular season commences on 9 September. The report, authored by analysts Jeremy Fowler, Dan Graziano, and others, outlines predictions for MVP contenders, fantasy sleepers, and team outlooks. Key narratives include the potential Super Bowl LX rematch to kick off the season, the MVP race between Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, and Patrick Mahomes, and projections for the Houston Texans and Detroit Lions.
Analysts predict the Houston Texans will secure the No. 1 seed in the AFC and reach their first Super Bowl, citing a defence ranked among the league’s best and offensive line improvements. In the NFC North, the Detroit Lions are tipped to move from last to first, benefiting from a roster described as terrific on both sides of the ball when healthy and one of the league’s easiest schedules.
The MVP conversation centres on Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, and Patrick Mahomes, with Drake Maye and Joe Burrow also cited as threats. Mahomes faces scrutiny due to a left ACL and LCL injury sustained in 2025, with his availability for Week 1 remaining uncertain. Other significant injury updates include Zach Charbonnet, Malik Nabers, and Micah Parsons, all recovering from major knee injuries with timelines that may extend into the regular season.
Offseason roster moves are expected to reshape team dynamics. The New England Patriots are anticipated to add wide receiver A.J. Brown, while the Raiders selected quarterback Fernando Mendoza with the No. 1 overall pick, with expectations for him to start within the first few weeks alongside veteran Kirk Cousins. Other notable shifts include Joey Bosa potentially reuniting with his brother Nick in San Francisco and Stefon Diggs seeking a new team.
Statistical trends and coaching changes also feature prominently in the analysis. The Rams are projected to improve under second-year coach Ben Johnson, while the Seahawks are predicted to regress after a historic 2025 season. The report notes that Aaron Rodgers needs 1,000 passing yards to reach 70,000 in his career, and the Rams led the league in plays with three-plus tight ends in 2025.
