Bills rookie named one of NFL’s most underrated players entering 2026 season
Fourth-round selection projected to challenge established targets in Joe Brady’s offence

Buffalo Bills wide receiver Skyler Bell has been identified by ESPN as one of the league’s top five underrated rookies entering the 2026 season. Drafted in the fourth round with the 125th overall pick, Bell is projected to compete for significant playing time in head coach Joe Brady’s offence, where he will vie for roles alongside new acquisition DJ Moore and established targets such as Khalil Shakir.

Draft analyst Jordan Reid described Bell’s fall to Day 3 of the NFL Draft as landing in the “perfect spot” for his development. Reid noted that Bell is expected to be an early contributor in Brady’s system, which also incorporated Moore this offseason. Bell’s collegiate success at UConn, where he set school records with 101 receptions and 13 touchdown catches in the 2025 season, provides a foundation for what analysts view as a versatile weapon for quarterback Josh Allen.

The Bills selected Bell following a standout final season at UConn, where he recorded 1,278 receiving yards and earned first-team All-America honours. He was also a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award, recognising his status as the nation’s top receiver. His athletic profile was further validated at the NFL Scouting Combine, where he recorded a 4.40-second 40-yard dash and a 41-inch vertical jump, demonstrating the speed and explosiveness required for inside and outside roles.

Head coach Joe Brady praised Bell’s “unique skill set” after the draft, expressing surprise that the receiver remained available until the fourth round. The Bills believe Bell possesses the versatility to stretch the field and create after the catch. He will compete for roster spots with Moore, Shakir, Joshua Palmer, and second-round pick Keon Coleman, who is entering a pivotal third season following an inconsistent start to his career.

While ESPN projects that Bell could transition from a developmental receiver to a primary weapon for Allen if he adapts quickly, the organisation acknowledges that playing time is not guaranteed. The extent of Bell’s immediate impact will depend on his ability to navigate a crowded depth chart and effectively compete against established veterans in training camp.
