The permanent, full-time position requires substantial financial acumen and strategic oversight of the World Heritage Site, with first interviews scheduled for July 2026.
English Heritage has opened recruitment for a permanent, full-time position as Head of Stonehenge, a role that places significant operational and financial responsibility on a single senior leader. The charity, which cares for over a million objects and hundreds of historic sites across England, describes the post as pivotal to the future of its most visited property.
Based at the World Heritage Site, the appointee will lead a large and diverse team of staff and volunteers. The core mandate involves delivering exceptional visitor experience standards while driving strong financial performance. The role requires managing complex budgets, overseeing health and safety compliance, and ensuring the site remains commercially sustainable.
The salary for the position is set at £64,189 per annum, with the final figure depending on the candidate’s skills, experience, and location. The package also includes 25 days of holiday plus bank holidays, rising to 28 days after three years, alongside matched pension contributions of up to 10%.
Operational duties extend to strategic planning for high-profile seasonal gatherings, including the summer and winter solstices. The successful candidate must demonstrate proven leadership in complex visitor-facing environments, with a track record of achieving revenue targets and managing conflicting priorities to deliver a sustainable operating surplus.
First interviews are scheduled for the week commencing 6 July 2026 via MS Teams. Final interviews will take place at Stonehenge on 17 July 2026. Applicants are required to submit a CV of no more than two sides and a cover letter of one side, specifically addressing what attracts them to the role and why now.
Danielle Reed, Business Support Manager, is the designated contact for queries regarding the recruitment process. English Heritage emphasises its commitment to equity and diversity, noting that the role is open to candidates from all backgrounds and supported by various employee networks.
