When is England’s first game at World Cup 2026?
Thomas Tuchel’s side face former semi-final opponents in Group L opener

England will commence their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign against Croatia on Wednesday, 17 June, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The fixture marks the opening match for Group L in the newly expanded 48-team tournament, with kick-off scheduled for 4pm local time, which translates to 9pm BST for viewers in the United Kingdom.

Managed by Thomas Tuchel, England enter the tournament as favourites following an unbeaten qualifying campaign. The squad, captained by Harry Kane who has enjoyed a prolific season, is seeking to secure a second men’s international tournament victory. This objective follows consecutive runners-up finishes at Euro 2020 and Euro 2024, with the team now targeting a deeper run in North America.

The opening opponents, Croatia, present a familiar challenge, having met England in the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup. Croatia continue to be led by 40-year-old midfielder Luka Modric and possess an excellent recent record at major tournaments. The match will be broadcast in the UK on ITV 1 and ITV X.

England are among the last teams to begin the tournament, playing almost a week after the opening match. Prior to the World Cup, the squad will play a final warm-up fixture against Costa Rica on the eve of the tournament. Subsequent group stage matches are scheduled for 23 June against Ghana at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, and 27 June against Panama at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.

The fixture represents a significant moment in English football history, as the nation seeks to translate consistent recent performances into a major trophy. The logistical schedule places England in the latter half of the opening week, allowing time for final preparations before facing the Croatian side in Arlington.
