England Cricket appoints Marcus North as first foreign selector in post-Ashes overhaul
The England and Wales Cricket Board has announced a revised Test squad for the New Zealand series, dropping established batsmen and recalling Ollie Robinson amid a fast-bowling shortage.
England Cricket has appointed former Australian batter Marcus North as its first foreign national selector, a move that signals a structural shift in the board’s approach to team selection following a 4-1 Ashes defeat to Australia. North, who has served as the director of cricket at Durham since 2018, replaces Luke Wright after a three-year tenure. The appointment is intended to address longstanding criticism regarding the selection panel’s criteria, with pundits previously arguing that county form was being overlooked in favour of other metrics.
North will contribute to the selection of all England men’s squads, spanning from the senior national team down to youth programs. His background includes playing for six county teams and working alongside England Test captain Ben Stokes at Durham. The board already employs a foreign-born head coach in Brendon McCullum, and North’s addition marks a significant step in the institution’s post-Ashes self-reflection and governance review.
Concurrently, England has announced a revised Test squad for the upcoming three-match series against New Zealand, which commences on June 4 at Lord's. The squad assembly will take place at Loughborough on 22 May. The announcement features notable changes to the batting order, with opener Zak Crawley and No. 3 batsman Ollie Pope dropped from the starting lineup.
The selection panel has included three uncapped players in the squad: opener Emilio Gay, wicketkeeper-batter James Rew, and fast bowler Sonny Baker. Gay has spent the past two years playing limited-overs internationals for Italy, citing his mother’s birthplace as his eligibility basis. Matthew Fisher, who made his sole Test appearance in 2022, has also been called up to bolster the pace attack.
England’s fast-bowling resources are currently constrained by a combination of retirements and injuries. With Chris Woakes joining James Anderson and Stuart Broad in retirement, and injuries ruling out Mark Wood and Brydon Carse, the board has turned to existing options. Fast bowler Ollie Robinson has been recalled to the squad after a two-year international hiatus, while Jofra Archer remains unavailable for the first Test due to T20 commitments. Shoaib Bashir has been selected despite being overlooked throughout the previous Ashes series.
The full squad for the first Test includes captain Ben Stokes, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Duckett, Jacob Bethell, Jamie Smith, Rehan Ahmed, Gus Atkinson, Josh Tongue, and Ollie Robinson. Atkinson has been selected despite suffering a concussion during a County Championship match. The selection is specific to the opening Test, with the board indicating that changes are inevitable as the McCullum-Stokes era seeks to stabilise performance levels.
