Eagles retain right to trade Brown despite Patriots expectation

Philadelphia Eagles insider Eliot Shorr-Parks has clarified the current standing of wide receiver A.J. Brown, confirming that while the New England Patriots are widely expected to acquire him after June 1, the transaction is not yet guaranteed. Speaking on WEEI on Thursday, Shorr-Parks noted that although the likelihood of another team intervening is low, the Eagles retain the contractual right to trade Brown elsewhere until the deal is officially completed.
Shorr-Parks observed that both the player and the Patriots have conducted their offseason operations in a manner consistent with an impending move, operating without public trade demands or negative commentary. He stated that both parties appear to be on the same page, with Brown specifically seeking to join the team to play alongside quarterback Drake Maye. The insider described the Patriots as a natural fit, suggesting that the Eagles intend to facilitate the move.
The conclusion of the NFL draft has further reduced the probability of a last-minute intervention from other franchises. Shorr-Parks pointed out that most teams have now addressed their receiver needs, making it unlikely that another side will present a compelling offer. He emphasized that the Patriots are seemingly the only team linked to Brown in recent months, with no reports indicating significant interest or offers from other clubs.
Despite the prevailing expectation, Shorr-Parks cautioned that no official agreement has been reported and that claims of a handshake deal remain unconfirmed. He reiterated that until Brown is formally traded, the Eagles are free to trade him wherever they choose. The organisation has no loyalty to the Patriots or the player if another team were to present a monster offer, although such a scenario is considered highly improbable at this stage.
Earlier reports from Adam Schefter suggested that the two sides are likely to come to an agreement after June 1, which would allow Brown to officially become a Patriot. Shorr-Parks expressed full expectation that Brown will end up in New England, noting that the lack of subliminal shots or public bashing of the player through sources indicates a smooth transition. The reality, however, remains that the transaction is contingent on finalisation, and the Eagles hold the ultimate leverage until that point is reached.
