Eagles overhaul offensive strategy ahead of 2026 season
The franchise has reshaped its roster with significant additions across the backfield and receiving corps, while retaining core stars Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley.
The Philadelphia Eagles have undertaken a comprehensive restructuring of their offensive roster ahead of the 2026 season, signalling a strategic pivot towards offensive reinforcement. The organisation prioritised offensive players in the recent draft and through free agency, aiming to bolster its attack under the direction of new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion. This shift follows a period of significant turnover, with the team losing several key contributors to free agency, including running back A.J. Dillon, wide receiver Jahan Dotson, tight end Kylen Granson, quarterback Sam Howell, offensive lineman Matt Pryor, and tight end Brett Toth.
To address these departures, the Eagles have secured a range of new personnel. Quarterback Andy Dalton was acquired via trade from Carolina, joining existing starter Jalen Hurts and returnee Tanner McKee. The backfield sees the addition of running back Dameon Pierce, who brings experience and special teams utility, alongside the continued presence of Saquon Barkley, who recorded back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons in 2024 and 2025. The receiving corps has been expanded with the acquisition of wide receivers Hollywood Brown and Dontayvion Wicks via trade, as well as the drafting of Southern Cal’s Makai Lemon, who is viewed as a potential Day 1 contributor.
The tight end group has also been reshuffled, with Dallas Goedert returning on a one-year deal after a career-high 11 touchdown season in 2025. The Eagles drafted Vanderbilt’s Eli Stowers in the second round to provide long-term depth, while also signing Johnny Mundt and Stone Smartt to round out the unit. The offensive line, which faced injury challenges in 2025, remains anchored by veteran Lane Johnson, whose presence has historically correlated with a strong team record. New offensive line coach Chris Kuper will oversee a unit that includes Jordan Mailata and Landon Dickerson, with additional depth added through draft picks Markel Bell and Micah Morris.
Mannion’s arrival introduces a new philosophical approach to the offence, with the coordinator bringing in former quarterbacks Josh Grizzard and Jerrod Johnson as senior assistants. The staff aims to integrate the new acquisitions, particularly Lemon and Wicks, into a system that relies heavily on the established talents of Hurts, Barkley, and Johnson. The Eagles have finished their nine-week offseason workout program with a full 90-man roster, incorporating eight draft picks and approximately ten undrafted free agents.
While the core of the offence remains intact, the depth chart is expected to undergo significant changes, particularly around the wide receiver positions where DeVonta Smith and A.J. Brown are projected to be split up after June 1. The organisation’s focus on offensive talent suggests a clear intent to maximise the potential of its existing stars while addressing the gaps created by recent free agency losses. The success of this restructuring will depend on how effectively Mannion can unify the new personnel with the team’s foundational players.
