Philadelphia receives draft capital and salary relief as receiver reunites with former Titans coach Mike Vrabel

The Philadelphia Eagles have traded wide receiver A.J. Brown to the New England Patriots, a move finalised on June 1 that reshapes the receiving corps for both franchises. In exchange for Brown, who turns 29 on June 30, Philadelphia received a 2028 first-round draft pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick. The transaction allows the Eagles to split over $43 million in dead salary cap space between the 2026 and 2027 seasons, providing immediate financial relief while offloading a contract that averages $32 million per season through 2029.

Brown becomes the Patriots' new number one receiver, reuniting with former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel, who originally drafted him in 2019. The move addresses a significant need for New England, which released veteran Stefon Diggs in free agency and signed Jayden Doubs. Brown is expected to complement Doubs in the two-wide receiver package, offering quarterback Drake Maye a proven target who has recorded 1,000 receiving yards in four consecutive seasons.

For the Eagles, the trade marks a strategic pivot under general manager Howie Roseman, who has worked to reshape the team's offensive weaponry. Philadelphia traded up in the first round of the 2026 NFL draft to select USC receiver Makai Lemon, acquired Dontayvion Wicks from the Green Bay Packers, and signed Hollywood Brown and Elijah Moore to one-year deals. Tight end Eli Stowers was also selected in the second round to pair with Dallas Goedert.

The decision to move Brown follows reported tensions between the receiver, quarterback Jalen Hurts, and the offensive system during the 2025 season. Brown, who helped the Eagles reach two Super Bowl appearances including a win in Super Bowl LIX, had publicly aired grievances regarding the passing game. The Eagles cited a desire to avoid further drama as they transition to a new offensive scheme under coordinator Sean Mannion, which is expected to be more timing-based than the previous one-on-one matchup style.

New England has also made significant adjustments to its offensive line to support the improved passing attack. The Patriots signed Alijah Vera-Tucker to a three-year deal to fill the left guard void, moved Jared Wilson to centre, and signed fullback Reggie Gilliam and tight end Julian Hill to add physicality. The Patriots have until the day before the first regular-season game to decide on Brown's $27.45 million option bonus for 2026, a decision that will determine the immediate cap impact of the acquisition.
