Eagles captain Mailata backs new offensive system and rookie Bell
The Super Bowl champion left tackle describes the new offensive coordinator as an "evil genius" and praises the rookie’s exceptional physical profile as the Philadelphia Eagles prepare to overhaul one of the league’s most productive units.

Philadelphia Eagles offensive captain Jordan Mailata has issued a strong public endorsement of new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion and rookie offensive tackle Markel Bell, signalling early cohesion within the locker room ahead of the 2026 season. Speaking following an organized team activity (OTA) practice session, Mailata highlighted the profound impact both figures have already made on the squad.
Mailata, who arrived in the NFL via the International Player Pathway Program after a career in rugby, has transformed into a cornerstone of the franchise. Now a Super Bowl champion and Second-Team All-Pro left tackle, his opinions carry significant weight. He recently was identified as one of the better-valued players on the roster relative to their draft position, a trajectory often compared to the remarkable journey of Vince Papale.
Describing Mannion’s football intellect, Mailata used vivid language to express his confidence in the new coordinator’s vision. He referred to Mannion as a "wizard" and an "evil genius," stating that if the three smartest people in the facility were locked in a room, Mannion would be among them. Mailata noted that players are already buying into the new system, expressing excitement to see the offensive strategy unfold as the season progresses.
The Eagles enter the 2026 campaign tasked with replacing one of the most productive offensive units in the league under a new system. While the specific details of Mannion’s playbook remain under wraps, Mailata’s enthusiasm suggests the leadership group is aligned. The veteran tackle emphasized that Mannion simply "knows ball," a sentiment that provides a stabilising foundation for the transition.
On the field, Mailata also directed attention to rookie Markel Bell, who was drafted out of Miami University. Bell is currently positioned as a developmental prospect learning behind future Hall of Famer Lane Johnson, with the potential to become a long-term starter. Mailata praised Bell’s physical attributes, specifically his size, joking that the rookie was "not of this planet" and questioning where the team found such a "big fellow."
Despite the early stage of the pre-season, Mailata’s dual endorsement underscores a sense of optimism within the offensive line. With Mannion’s system yet to be fully tested in games and Bell’s future role still developing, the captain’s support serves as a key indicator of the team’s internal morale as training camp approaches.
