Women's One-Day Cup: Levick lifts Durham off bottom

Durham women have moved up four places in the Women’s One-Day Cup table, escaping the bottom of the standings after a comprehensive 120-run victory over Somerset at Chester-le-Street. The win provides a significant boost to Durham’s campaign in a congested tournament where just eight points separate the bottom six teams, although a slight gap has begun to open between them and the runaway leaders: The Blaze, Hampshire, and Surrey.

The match was defined by Katie Levick’s exceptional bowling performance, which dismantled the Somerset chase. After Durham posted 292-8, Somerset looked solid at 104-2 before Levick triggered a collapse that saw them finish all out for 172. Her six wickets for 37 runs proved decisive, rendering a 67 from Niamh Holland insufficient to secure a result.

Durham’s innings had been precarious earlier, with regular wickets falling despite a half-century from captain Hollie Armitage, who scored 58. The team recovered from 164-5 to reach their total, driven by quick-fire half-centuries from Bess Heath (51) and Mia Rogers (56).

In other fixtures, the table’s hierarchy shifted further as defending champions Lancashire suffered a third consecutive defeat. Surrey, currently third in the standings, edged past Lancashire by three wickets at the Kia Oval. Surrey skipper Kira Chathli returned to the side to score an unbeaten 88 from 101 balls, securing the victory after a crucial 134-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Australian all-rounder Maitlan Brown.

Brown signed off her stint at Surrey with a score of 62 from 74 balls, having also taken 3-46 with the ball earlier. Lancashire’s chase was anchored by a 69 from opener Eve Jones, who shared a 70-run partnership with Grace Johnson, but it was not enough to prevent the reigning and inaugural champions from dropping to the foot of the table.

Elsewhere, Warwickshire defeated Yorkshire by three wickets at Scarborough, handing the visitors their fifth defeat in eight games. Warwickshire’s Jess Jonassen delivered an outstanding all-round performance, scoring a third century of the season with 110 from 102 balls and taking three wickets.

Yorkshire’s reply was led by Chloe Brewer’s 56, which guided them to 239-7 with 16 balls remaining. The chase had started poorly for Warwickshire when Georgia Redmayne was run out off the first ball, but contributions from Amu Surenkumar (45) and Brewer secured the win. Yorkshire were bowled out for 238 with four balls remaining, despite Jonassen’s 89-run second-wicket partnership with Georgie Boyce.
