Meet Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje: Duke's 7-foot phenom and next potential No. 1 draft pick
Barcelona junior joins Blue Devils for two-year stint ahead of 2028 NBA Draft eligibility

Duke University has secured the commitment of 17-year-old basketball prospect Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje, who has reclassified from the 2027 to the 2026 recruitment class. The seven-foot player, who currently plays for FC Barcelona, will spend two seasons at the university before becoming eligible for the 2028 NBA Draft. The commitment was announced on April 30, arriving amidst the transfer portal frenzy, though it received less media attention than typical five-star declarations.

Boumtje Boumtje’s path to Duke is nontraditional. Born in Germany to Ruben Boumtje Boumtje, a former Georgetown player and current Head of League Operations for the Basketball Africa League, he lived in various US states including Chicago, Florida, and Delaware before moving to Barcelona at age 14. He has developed his game through club basketball in Spain rather than the US high school system, having attended a USA Basketball minicamp in Colorado Springs last October but otherwise playing internationally.

Physical measurements taken at the 2025 USA Basketball trials and the Adidas Eurocamp in Treviso, Italy, highlight his athletic profile. He measured 7 feet tall with shoes on, boasting a 9-foot-4 standing reach and a 7-foot-3 wingspan. His running jump reaches 12 feet 2 inches, and he possesses a 245-pound frame. Duke staff have compared his developmental trajectory to Cameron Boozer and Jayson Tatum, noting his potential as a stretch-five who can pick-and-pop and space the floor.

His recent performance underscores his readiness for elite competition. At the Adidas NextGen EuroLeague Finals in Greece, Boumtje Boumtje led FC Barcelona’s U18 team to a championship, averaging 19 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 3.8 assists while shooting 47.4% from three-point range. NBA scouts have noted that had he played high school basketball in the United States, he could have challenged Kansas signee Tyran Stokes for the top spot in the 2026 class.

Despite the unusual two-year commitment, Boumtje Boumtje expressed confidence in his development under Jon Scheyer. He aims to compete for a spot on USA Basketball’s FIBA U17 squad before enrolling at Duke in Durham, North Carolina. His stated goal is to win the ACC and the national title, with the understanding that he will serve as a key contributor in his second season before entering the 2028 NBA Draft.
