DoorDash is acquiring the Grubhub Campus Dining business from Wonder for $300 million, a move designed to expand the company’s reach beyond conventional restaurant delivery. The transaction includes a further $125 million investment in Wonder’s Series D funding round. The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2027.

The campus dining platform currently operates at more than 450 colleges and universities. It enables students to order from dining facilities, pay with dining dollars, and schedule pickups. By acquiring an established merchant and consumer infrastructure, DoorDash avoids the cost of building a campus product from scratch.

The company intends to expand this technology beyond campuses into stadiums, hotels, and similar venues. This strategy aims to increase order density and create additional revenue streams in controlled environments. DoorDash’s Q2 2026 Marketplace Gross Order Value rose 36% to $33.1 billion, with orders increasing 27% to 970 million.

The $300 million purchase is modest relative to DoorDash’s financial scale. The company generated $742 million in free cash flow in Q2, up from $355 million a year earlier, while adjusted EBITDA reached $914 million, a 40% increase. This provides the capacity to fund the acquisition without significant pressure on near-term liquidity.

The additional investment in Wonder offers strategic exposure to robotics and artificial intelligence. Wonder has expanded to 157 locations, more than quadrupling its footprint since early 2025, and plans to enter Texas in 2027. These technologies could eventually improve food preparation and delivery economics, supporting longer-term margin expansion.

However, the immediate financial contribution from the Grubhub Campus Dining acquisition is unlikely to be material relative to DoorDash’s existing scale. The larger valuation argument depends on successfully expanding the campus technology into new venues, a proposition that remains unproven. DoorDash’s Q2 research and development expense rose to $535 million from $351 million a year earlier, indicating ongoing investment in its global technology platform.
