Dolphins’ Washington targets leadership role amid receiver room overhaul
Malik Washington seeks to establish himself as a cultural anchor for the Miami Dolphins as the team integrates a significant influx of new talent ahead of the 2026 season.

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Malik Washington has identified leadership as his primary objective for the 2026 season, positioning himself as a stabilising force within a receiver room undergoing significant personnel changes. Washington, who entered the league as a sixth-round selection in the 2024 NFL draft, stated during a media availability that his focus has shifted from individual production to motivating his teammates.
“I want to be a leader in that room,” Washington said. “I want to be a leader on this team. I want to make guys want to go harder. I want to make guys want to work and put in everything they got each and every day.”
The Dolphins have substantially altered their roster composition this offseason, adding several new wide receivers including Tutu Atwell, Jalen Tolbert, Terrace Marshall Jr., Caleb Douglas, Chris Bell, Kevin Coleman Jr., Jalen Reagor, and Donaven McCulley. Washington is one of only three wide receivers returning from the previous season’s roster, placing him in a position to influence the development and work ethic of the incoming players.
Washington’s approach centres on instilling a competitive mindset among his peers. He emphasised the importance of treating every practice and game day with the intensity of a starting wide receiver. “We all want to be WR1s, we all want to take the load, so approach it like that,” he explained, highlighting his desire to elevate the overall standard of performance within the unit.
Over his first two seasons, Washington has established himself as a reliable contributor, recording 72 receptions for 540 yards and three touchdowns, along with 135 rushing yards and two scores. He has also served as the team’s primary punt and kick returner, providing versatility that makes it unlikely he will be cut. However, his stated commitment to leadership could further secure his standing amidst the increased competition for roster spots.
While head coach Jeff Hafley has recently discussed the growth of the Dolphins’ top two quarterbacks, Washington’s narrative remains focused on the receiver room’s internal dynamics. His ability to blend on-field production with a leadership role in a newly constructed group will be a key factor in his continued relevance with the franchise.
