Open-source emulator updates infrastructure to combat AI scraping while enabling legacy hardware emulation

The Dolphin emulator team has released version 2606, marking a significant milestone in the emulation of Nintendo GameCube and Wii hardware. The update introduces full support for the Nintendo Game Boy Player, a peripheral that allowed users to play handheld titles on the home console. This development follows a rapid implementation process that began as an April Fools’ Day tease in 2026 but was completed to address a feature request that had remained open for over 16 years.

To achieve this, the team utilised the integrated mGBA core to emulate the Game Boy Advance hardware. Initial testing relied on the official Start-Up Disc, which masked audio issues due to heavy processing. These were later corrected following feedback from hardware expert extrems, who is also the author of the definitive Game Boy Interface homebrew software. The emulator now automatically attaches the emulated hardware when necessary, though the team notes that dedicated Game Boy emulators remain the superior option for most users.

A major graphical enhancement in this release is the introduction of the "Bloom Blurred" graphics mod. Developer iwubcode implemented a solution that allows Dolphin to perform its own blur on bloom effects, accounting for the current internal resolution. This fixes a long-standing visual issue in flagship titles such as Metroid Prime 3 and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, where high-resolution rendering previously resulted in a layered or duplicated light appearance. Over 50 games already have bloom definitions available for this mod.

The update also enables RetroAchievements functionality for Wii games, allowing users to track progress and compete on leaderboards. Additional features include a new mixer for Wii Remote speaker audio, which can be routed to additional output devices such as USB audio or Bluetooth speakers, and custom screen cropping capabilities. The latter allows users to isolate specific views in split-screen multiplayer without risking netplay desyncs, a limitation that previously affected viewport cheats.

Infrastructure changes accompany the software updates. The Dolphin website has migrated to Bunny CDN and a Web Application Firewall to mitigate traffic from AI scrapers, which had previously caused unsustainable load and outages. The minimum Android operating system requirement has also been raised from Android 5 to Android 7 to allow for cleaner code and new features. Furthermore, the Redump integration has been updated to point to the new Redump.info domain due to instability on the original site.
