Manager Dave Roberts adjusts schedule as Shohei Ohtani's pitching value eclipses his hitting contribution

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has altered the schedule of two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani to prioritise his pitching duties over his role as a designated hitter. This strategic shift marks a significant adjustment for the franchise as they pursue a third consecutive championship, with the organisation now managing Ohtani's workload to ensure his availability for the playoffs.

As of early May 2026, the statistical disparity between Ohtani's contributions on the mound and at the plate has become evident. His value as a pitcher, measured by a Wins Above Replacement (WAR) of 1.3, has surpassed his performance as a designated hitter, which currently stands at 0.7 WAR. This metric suggests that the player's immense value is increasingly driven by his pitching rather than his hitting for the first time in the 2026 season.

To accommodate this shift, the Dodgers have implemented a strategy where Ohtani takes a rest from hitting on occasions when he is scheduled to start on the mound. This approach, described by Roberts as a necessary compromise, allows Ohtani to make every start on the bump. The manager noted that while there is a governor in place on Ohtani's usage, the player himself is deferring to his pitching role to ensure he can take every turn in the rotation.

The team's approach is supported by their depth, which allows them to run a six-man rotation. This structure could see Ohtani make approximately 27 starts throughout the season, potentially clearing the innings threshold required for Cy Young consideration. Roberts indicated that the primary objective remains keeping the star healthy and in peak form for October, ensuring the numbers and statistics will take care of themselves if the team stays competitive.

On the mound, Ohtani has posted a sparkling 0.60 ERA and a 688 ERA+ through his first five starts of the 2026 season. He has not allowed a home run and has recorded a 28.6% strikeout rate. Underlying metrics, including an FIP of 1.98, suggest this dominance is backed by skill rather than luck, although the manager remains cautious about sustaining such an low ERA indefinitely.

Ohtani has also made subtle adjustments to his repertoire to maintain this level of performance. He has increased the use of his splitter and curve while de-emphasising his slider, adding movement to his curve and cutter to compensate for any decline in other areas. While his hitting metrics have seen a drop in OPS+ from 184 to 136 relative to pre-2026 standards, he remains highly productive and capable of changing the tenor of the discussion if he finds his form.
