Dodgers confirm Blake Snell’s return after elbow injury layoff

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has confirmed that starting pitcher Blake Snell is expected to return to the mound on Tuesday, 11 August. The left-hander’s return follows a significant layoff due to an elbow injury that first sidelined him in early May, raising questions about his availability for the remainder of the campaign.

Snell’s path back to the major league roster involved a minor league rehabilitation assignment with the organisation’s Triple-A affiliate. On 4 August, he pitched 3⅔ innings in a rehab game, throwing 73 pitches with 41 strikes. The outing saw him strike out three batters, though he also allowed five hits, two home runs, and four walks, providing the front office with data on his current command and stamina levels.

The 33-year-old has made only one appearance in the major leagues this season. During his sole start against the Atlanta Braves on 9 May, Snell pitched three innings, striking out five runners but ultimately taking the loss after allowing six hits, five runs, and two walks. The injury has effectively limited his contribution to the Dodgers’ rotation since the beginning of the month.

Snell’s career trajectory has been marked by elite performance across multiple franchises. He began his major league career with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2016, winning the American League Cy Young Award in 2018. Following a trade to the San Diego Padres, he captured the National League Cy Young Award in 2023. After a one-year stint with the San Francisco Giants in 2024, he signed with the Dodgers as a free agent on 30 November 2024.

Entering his 11th season, Snell holds a career win-loss record of 81-63 with a 3.17 earned run average. He has started 223 games and recorded 1,445 strikeouts, maintaining an MLB career record of 11.9 strikeouts per nine innings. His return on 11 August will be closely monitored as the Dodgers look to integrate their ace back into the rotation after a prolonged absence.
