DJI has unveiled the Osmo Mobile 8P, a new smartphone gimbal designed to address the limitations of front-facing camera quality for solo creators. The device introduces a detachable Frametap remote control featuring a built-in screen, joystick, and record button. This addition allows users to frame shots using the smartphone's higher-resolution rear camera from a distance of over 150 feet, eliminating the need to see the phone screen directly.

The remote enables users to control the gimbal and activate recording from a significant range. The built-in screen mirrors the smartphone display, allowing vloggers to adjust composition while capturing themselves with the superior rear lens. This feature is particularly useful for creators who wish to maintain a distance from the subject while ensuring precise framing without relying on lower-quality front-facing sensors.

The gimbal integrates DJI's latest ActiveTrack 8.0 technology, which can be enhanced by an optional Multifunctional Module 2. This module uses a built-in camera to track people, pets, and objects, such as cars, even in crowded settings or around obstructions. Native tracking on iPhones is supported via Apple DockKit without the optional module, whereas Android users require the Multifunctional Module 2 to access similar tracking capabilities through the Mimo app or other third-party camera applications.

In terms of hardware and battery performance, the Osmo Mobile 8P offers 10 hours of battery life, matching previous models. It remains compatible with DJI wireless microphones, specifically the Mic Mini 2 and its receiver, ensuring high-quality audio capture. The device also supports creative camera modes including DynamicZoom, Slow Shutter, Action Shot, and Widescreen in a 2.35:1 format, alongside the ability to tilt the pan axis for unique perspectives.

Pricing in Europe starts at £135 for the standard combo, with the Advanced Tracking Combo priced at £169 and the Creator Combo at £195. The product is currently available in Europe but is not yet available in the US market. The launch marks a significant update for the brand's mobile stabilisation line, focusing on remote operation and advanced subject tracking for professional content creation.
