Disney tests AI-driven search and recommendation tools across streaming platforms
The company is trialling natural language search capabilities and an AI chatbot for sports, following similar moves by competitors including Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery.

Disney is currently testing a new artificial intelligence-powered tool for Disney Plus that utilises natural language search, voice queries, or suggested prompts to generate customised rows of show and movie recommendations. The feature, described as a "limited beta experiment," is being rolled out to a small group of select subscribers. According to the company, the tool is designed to suggest content that "fits the moment," moving beyond traditional recommendation engines that rely solely on viewing history.
In a parallel development, Disney is introducing an AI-assisted conversational search experience for its ESPN platform. Known as ESPN Search, this feature functions as a chatbot that provides answers, statistics, and recommendations drawn from the company’s sports knowledge ecosystem. The tool is currently in beta with a subset of users, allowing them to ask questions and receive data-driven responses.
These initiatives align with recent strategic directives from Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro. During an earnings call this week, D’Amaro reiterated plans to establish Disney Plus as the "digital centerpiece" of the company’s operations. He emphasised a focus on increased personalisation, exclusivity, and enhanced benefits for subscribers as the firm seeks to differentiate its offerings in a crowded market.
The move places Disney in direct competition with other major streaming services that are rapidly integrating AI into their user interfaces. Netflix began testing an OpenAI-powered conversational search tool last year, while Warner Bros. Discovery recently announced experiments with a conversational search experience for HBO Max. Additionally, Peacock has introduced an AI narrator for Bravo clips, signalling a broader industry shift towards AI-driven content discovery.
While the specific timeline for a wider public release of these features has not been disclosed, the limited beta tests indicate a significant step in Disney’s technology roadmap. The company is currently gauging user response to these tools before determining the scope of a full rollout across its platforms.
The introduction of these features highlights the intensifying competition among streaming providers to reduce friction in content discovery. As libraries of content expand, platforms are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence to help users navigate vast catalogs. Disney’s dual approach—combining visual recommendation rows with interactive chatbot functionality—suggests a strategy aimed at capturing both passive and active user engagement.
Analysts note that the efficacy of these tools remains to be seen, as the current tests are confined to small user groups. The company has not disclosed the exact size of the subscriber bases participating in the Disney Plus and ESPN betas. However, the rapid adoption of similar technologies by competitors suggests that AI-driven search may soon become a standard expectation for streaming services.
As the industry continues to evolve, the focus on personalisation is likely to deepen. Disney’s emphasis on making its streaming service the "digital centerpiece" of its business model underscores the importance of user experience in retaining subscribers. The outcome of these beta tests will provide insight into how effectively AI can enhance engagement and drive retention in the long term.
