Merrill Kelly reaches 1,000 innings milestone as Arizona improves to 12-4 since May 9

The Arizona Diamondbacks extended their winning streak to three games on Monday, defeating the San Francisco Giants 6-2 in a contest that highlighted both individual milestones and sustained team momentum. The victory improves Arizona’s record to 12-4 since May 9, reinforcing their position as one of the league’s more consistent performers during this period.

Merrill Kelly was instrumental in securing the win, pitching seven innings and allowing two runs on four hits while striking out four batters. The performance marked a significant career milestone for the veteran right-hander, who became the fourth pitcher in franchise history to reach 1,000 career innings. Kelly’s four-game winning streak is the second-longest of his eight-year career, trailing only a five-game streak from May 15 to June 9, 2023. He also improved to 4-0 in his last six starts against the Giants, having defeated them for the second time in six days.

Offensively, Ketel Marte provided critical support with four hits, including a tying double in the fifth inning and a two-run single in the sixth. Marte has now recorded three or more hits for the third consecutive game, maintaining a nine-game hitting streak. Corbin Carroll also contributed to the offensive surge, extending his major league-best and season-high hitting streak to 13 games.

The game featured several key scoring moments. Gabriel Moreno homered leading off the third inning to give Arizona its first baserunner. After Marte’s tying double, Geraldo Perdomo singled to put the Diamondbacks ahead 3-2, and Adrian Del Castillo added an RBI single. The Giants had previously taken a 2-1 lead when Rafael Devers hit a go-ahead, two-run double in the fourth inning.

San Francisco’s pitching struggled to contain Arizona’s lineup. Landen Roupp, making his second straight start against the Diamondbacks, allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits over five innings while striking out seven. Although Roupp had held Arizona to one run and seven hits in six innings during his previous start in Phoenix, he faced pressure in the fifth inning when the Diamondbacks loaded the bases on three straight singles. He escaped further damage by retiring Perdomo on a called third strike and inducing a foul popup from Nolan Arenado. The Giants hold a 32-15 home record against Arizona dating to 2020, but this result interrupted their recent dominance.

Looking ahead, the Diamondbacks will turn to left-handed pitcher Eduardo Rodríguez (4-1, 2.24 ERA) on Tuesday. The Giants are scheduled to counter with right-handed pitcher Tyler Mahle (1-6, 6.10 ERA).
