Daniels issues cease-and-desist to LSU over jersey number dispute
Dispute centres on Louisiana State University’s decision to assign No. 5 to cornerback DJ Pickett, a number previously worn by Daniels during his Heisman Trophy-winning season.
Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels has issued a cease-and-desist letter to Louisiana State University, asserting control over the use of his name, image and likeness. The legal action follows the university’s decision to allow sophomore cornerback DJ Pickett to wear the No. 5 jersey, a number previously worn by Daniels during his Heisman Trophy-winning season in 2023.
Daniels’ family expressed deep disappointment, stating they believed the number would be protected as part of his legacy. A spokesperson for the quarterback described the university’s decision as profoundly disrespectful, noting that Daniels and his family had every reason to believe their wishes regarding the number would be honoured.
LSU head coach Lane Kiffin confirmed that Pickett had been promised the No. 5 jersey during recruitment in 2024. Kiffin noted that former coach Brian Kelly had previously withheld the number due to Daniels’ disapproval, comparing the situation to the treatment of Joe Burrow’s No. 9 jersey at the institution.
Kelly, who was fired last season, stated he was not prepared to issue the number to another player until a full commitment from another Heisman Trophy winner was secured. He argued that the university could not treat the two situations differently, referencing how Burrow’s number has not been worn since he led the Tigers to a national championship in 2019.
Pickett, who recorded three interceptions and 37 total tackles as a freshman wearing No. 3, was spotted wearing No. 5 during preseason practice. The Tigers will open their 2026 campaign against Clemson on 5 September, following a 7-6 record in the previous season.
