Dallas Wings secure historic season opener victory under new head coach Jose Fernandez
New head coach Jose Fernandez's inaugural game against the Indiana Fever highlights improved preparation and communication, though the team acknowledges significant work remains ahead.
The Dallas Wings have recorded their first regular-season victory of the 2026 campaign, defeating the Indiana Fever 107-105 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. This contest, which served as the season opener for both franchises, represents a significant statistical anomaly in the league's history, marking the first instance where both teams in a season opener reached the 100-point mark.
New head coach Jose Fernandez, in his first game leading the franchise, emphasised that the team's performance reflected his "really high standards." The victory was built on tangible improvements in preparation, communication, ball sharing, and shot selection. Fernandez noted that while the team met the basic requirement of winning, the execution of these specific tactical elements was the primary indicator of the squad's readiness.
The Wings' offensive output was driven by a balanced scoring attack involving five players who reached double figures. Arike Ogunbowale led the team with 22 points in 28 minutes, attributing her form to dedicated study following her absence from the previous season's final 12 games due to injury. Paige Bueckers and Odyssey Sims, both starting in the backcourt, each contributed 20 points with high efficiency, while Aziaha James provided a perfect 3-of-3 performance from three-point range off the bench.
The selection of Azzi Fudd, the No. 1 overall pick, as the franchise's top asset, has already yielded immediate results. Fudd made her WNBA debut coming off the bench, playing 17 minutes and 31 seconds where she attempted two three-pointers and worked to disrupt the play of Indiana's guards, Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell. Fernandez described the backcourt rotation as possessing five really talented players, including Fudd, Sims, Bueckers, Ogunbowale, and James.
Despite the positive result, the Wings acknowledged they are not a finished product. The team conceded the paint battle 62-44 and faced challenges from the Fever's defensive pressure, which disrupted the free-flowing nature of Dallas's offence. While the frontcourt pairing of Jessica Shepard and Alanna Smith provided stability, the team recognised that their current form is not solely reliant on the momentum of a preseason three-game winning streak.
The victory improves the Wings' record in season openers to 3-1 since 2023, a statistic that underscores a trend of strong starts under new management. However, the coaching staff remains focused on the long-term project, with Fernandez noting the difficulty of securing wins in the league and the necessity of maintaining focus on daily practice and immediate objectives rather than past results.
