Jerry Jones gets his wish as post-World Cup update shared from Dallas Cowboys
Owner Jerry Jones moves quickly to revert AT&T Stadium to artificial surface, citing economic and operational priorities over player preference

The Dallas Cowboys have commenced the removal of the natural grass pitch at AT&T Stadium immediately following the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup final. Footage from Arlington shows heavy machinery actively pulling up the surface that was laid down for the tournament, which concluded with a match between France and Spain earlier in the week.

Owner Jerry Jones has reaffirmed his commitment to retaining the stadium’s artificial turf for the upcoming 2026 NFL regular season. Jones cited economic benefits and operational flexibility as the primary drivers for the decision, maintaining his stance that the synthetic surface is not less safe than natural grass and ultimately benefits players through improved economics.

This move comes despite appeals from NFL players across the league for natural grass to become the standard playing surface. Jones previously articulated his opposition to installing grass fields during the NFL’s annual meetings in April, stating that the team has no belief that grass is safer and that the turf improves the economics of the game.

The Cowboys’ 2026 regular season is scheduled to commence at AT&T Stadium on 20 September. Prior to that, the team will host the New Orleans Saints in their final pre-season game at the end of August. The organization has made significant roster changes since the end of the 2025 season, including draft picks, as Jones looks to improve on the team’s 7-9 record from the previous year.

Jones’ decision to revert to artificial turf is likely to draw further criticism from fans and players alike. He was reportedly booed by spectators during the France versus Spain World Cup final when he appeared on the stadium’s jumbo screens, highlighting the existing tension between the owner and the fanbase regarding stadium operations and policy.
