Cubs’ Unprecedented Season Pattern Deepens as Losing Streak Hits Ten
Despite remaining above the .500 mark, the Chicago Cubs have matched the longest losing streak of the current season, trailing only the New York Mets, while marking the earliest point in a season any team has recorded two ten-game winning streaks and one ten-game losing streak.

The Chicago Cubs extended their current losing streak to ten games on Tuesday following a 12-1 defeat to the Pittsburgh Pirates, a result that underscores a volatile season defined by extreme statistical sequencing. The loss leaves the team with a record of 29-26, keeping them above the .500 threshold primarily due to two separate ten-game winning streaks earlier in the 2026 campaign. This specific combination of streaks makes the Cubs the first team since the 2017 Los Angeles Dodgers to record two ten-game winning streaks and one ten-game losing streak in a single season.
The achievement was reached by May 26, marking the earliest point in a season any team has secured this statistical profile. The Cubs began the season 7-9 before winning ten consecutive games, followed by three losses, another ten-game winning streak, and a subsequent 2-14 run. These two ten-game winning streaks are the longest in baseball this season, with no other team recording a winning streak of more than eight games. The current losing skid is now tied for the 13th-longest in franchise history and represents the longest such run since the team lost twelve games in a row twice in 2021.
Offensive struggles have been central to the current slump, with the team going 1 for 13 with runners in scoring position and leaving 11 runners on base during Tuesday’s game. While the offensive lineup is largely at full strength, with only part-time player Matt Shaw listed as injured, the group has failed to convert baserunner opportunities into runs. The pitching rotation has been significantly impacted by injuries, with Matthew Boyd, Cade Horton, Justin Steele, and Edward Cabrera placed on the injured list.
Consequently, Jordan Wicks was forced into his first Major League Baseball start since 2024. Wicks yielded eight runs on nine hits in 4 ⅓ innings, contributing to the team’s defensive difficulties. The Cubs are now two losses away from equalling the longest losing streak of the 2026 MLB season, which is currently held by the New York Mets at twelve games. The Philadelphia Phillies also recorded a ten-game losing streak earlier in the season.
Looking ahead, the Cubs are scheduled to face the Pirates again on Wednesday, with Jameson Taillon (2-4, 5.20 ERA) set to pitch against Bubba Chandler (1-6, 4.79 ERA). The team’s current trajectory approaches the franchise record for consecutive losses, which stands at fourteen games set during the 1997 season.
