Iowa splits doubleheader with rehab appearances; Knoxville and South Bend record lopsided victories

The Chicago Cubs minor league system recorded mixed results across three levels of play on 7 June 2026, highlighting both immediate offensive capabilities and long-term roster management strategies. The Triple-A Iowa Cubs split a doubleheader against the Toledo Mud Hens, while the High-A Knoxville Smokies and South Bend Cubs secured decisive victories through high-volume scoring.

At the Triple-A level, the Iowa Cubs split a doubleheader with the Toledo Mud Hens, winning the first contest 7-5 and losing the second 8-1. The opening game featured a rehabilitation start by right-hander Matthew Boyd, who secured the win over five innings. Boyd allowed three home runs on seven hits, striking out five and walking one, while throwing 80 pitches with a 70 per cent strike rate. Both Boyd and manager Craig Counsell indicated that Boyd is expected to make his next start with the major league squad.

Matt Shaw also participated in a rehabilitation stint at first base for Iowa during the doubleheader. Shaw went 1 for 3 with a walk, one RBI, and one run scored. In the second game, Vince Velazquez provided a strong start, allowing only one run over three innings, but the bullpen struggled in the final three frames. Paul Campbell surrendered seven runs on eight hits, including four home runs, in his relief appearance.

In High-A action, the Knoxville Smokies defeated the Birmingham Barons 14-5, driven by a six-home-run offensive outburst. Third baseman Jefferson Rojas hit two home runs, including the first in Covenant Health Park history to land in the Yardley Flats. Rojas finished 3 for 3 with a double, three runs scored, and three RBIs. Andy Garriola added his team-leading 11th home run of the season, while Owen Ayers, Carter Trice, and Edgar Alvarez also connected from the plate.

The High-A South Bend Cubs also demonstrated significant offensive power, beating the Quad Cities River Bandits 13-2. Christian Olivo, Josiah Hartshorn, and Miguel Useche each hit a home run in the victory. Hartshorn, who has hit four home runs in just 12 games at High-A, contributed a home run and a two-run double. The pitching staff, led by Will Sanders and JP Wheat, maintained a shutout until the eighth inning.

Conversely, the Single-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans suffered a 4-2 loss to the Charleston RiverDogs. Dominick Reid pitched five innings, allowing two runs, but closer Edwardo Melendez took the loss after yielding two runs in the eighth inning. The Pelicans managed only two hits in the game, with Darlyn DeLeon recording one hit and one run scored.

Additionally, the Cubs organisation announced the signing of right-hander Andrew Wantz, who has been assigned to Triple-A Iowa. The mixed results across the affiliates underscore the varying stages of player development and immediate team performance within the Cubs’ minor league structure.
