CSK face playoff lifeline as SRH seek qualification boost at Chepauk
Chennai Super Kings require a victory to keep their postseason hopes alive, while Sunrisers Hyderabad look to secure their spot with seven wins already on the board.

Chennai Super Kings face a critical juncture in the IPL 2026 season as they prepare to host Sunrisers Hyderabad at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Monday, 18 May 2026. With two league matches remaining, the Super Kings are in a must-win position to maintain their playoff aspirations. For Sunrisers Hyderabad, who currently hold seven wins, the contest offers a chance to solidify their qualification status, though a defeat could complicate their path to the postseason.
The tactical narrative of the match centres on CSK’s ability to contain the explosive opening partnership of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma. During their earlier encounter this season, the duo dominated the Super Kings by scoring 75 runs in just 5.5 overs, a surge that ultimately proved decisive. CSK’s recent struggles in the powerplay, particularly against Lucknow Super Giants, have highlighted the urgency of neutralising this threat early in the innings.
Spencer Johnson, a pacer for CSK, emphasised the strategic importance of the opening overs. “You may not win the match in the powerplay, but you can lose it there,” Johnson stated, acknowledging the quality of the SRH openers and the team’s preparation to counter them. The Super Kings intend to leverage the specific conditions at Chepauk, which are expected to offer more bounce and assistance to bowlers compared to the flatter pitches encountered in Hyderabad.
To exploit these conditions, CSK plans to deploy a significant left-arm bowling strategy. The squad features a trio of left-arm pacers in Johnson, Mukesh Choudhary, and Gurjapneet Singh, all capable of angling the ball away from the left-handed Head and Sharma. Additionally, left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein is expected to play a key role, targeting Abhishek Sharma’s noted vulnerability against spin during the powerplay.
Sunrisers Hyderabad, however, possess considerable firepower beyond their openers. Batting coach Varun Aaron has identified Heinrich Klaasen as the “fulcrum” of their batting lineup, praising him as one of the best T20 batters over the last seven to eight years. Klaasen’s consistency in the middle order, combined with the potential for rapid acceleration from Ishan Kishan, presents a formidable challenge for the CSK defence.
