Cruzeiro control their Copa Libertadores destiny ahead of final group stage clash
With Universidad Católica leading the group and Boca Juniors in contention, Cruzeiro face Ecuador’s Barcelona at Mineirão in a decisive fixture that determines their continental fate.

Cruzeiro have placed their progression to the Copa Libertadores round of 16 firmly in their own hands as they prepare for the final match of the group stage. The Brazilian club will host Ecuadorian side Barcelona at the Mineirão stadium, with a simple victory guaranteeing their advancement to the knockout phase of South America’s premier club competition.
The team from Minas Gerais currently occupies second place in the group standings with eight points. This position was secured following a recent draw against Boca Juniors at La Bombonera. While a win against Barcelona would mathematically ensure qualification regardless of other results, Cruzeiro can also advance with a draw, provided that Boca Juniors fail to defeat Universidad Católica in their concurrent final group fixture.
Universidad Católica of Chile currently leads the group with ten points. The Chilean side strengthened their position after defeating Barcelona 2-0 in Santiago on Thursday, 21 May. Their standing means that Cruzeiro must win their match and hope for a loss by Universidad Católica to secure first place in the group, as the Chilean team holds the head-to-head advantage over Cruzeiro.
The head-to-head criterion serves as the primary tiebreaker in the group stage. Universidad Católica holds the edge due to their victory in the previous meeting in Belo Horizonte and their draw in the return fixture at home. This structural advantage complicates Cruzeiro’s path to topping the group, even if they emerge victorious against Barcelona.
Boca Juniors sit in third place with seven points, while Barcelona remain at the bottom of the table with four points. The Ecuadorian side has already been eliminated from the tournament, leaving their final match against Cruzeiro as a contest for pride rather than qualification. The outcome of the Cruzeiro versus Barcelona match, alongside the result between Boca Juniors and Universidad Católica, will determine the final group standings and seeding for the round of 16.
