Cubs secure 3-2 victory as Bericoto error seals late win

The Chicago Cubs defeated the San Francisco Giants 3-2 in ten innings on Saturday, a result driven by Pete Crow-Armstrong’s two home runs and a critical fielding error in the final frame. The victory marks the first time the 2026 San Francisco Giants have failed to win four consecutive games, halting a momentum shift that had seen the club score heavily in their previous outing.

Crow-Armstrong provided the offensive spark for Chicago, launching his first home run in the sixth inning off Cubs starter Landen Roupp. He followed this with a game-tying home run in the bottom of the ninth off closer Keaton Winn, forcing extra innings after the Giants had taken a 2-1 lead. The Cubs ultimately secured the win in the tenth inning when Victor Bericoto committed a fielding error that allowed Michael Busch’s single to score the decisive run.

Starting pitching was a focal point of the contest, with Roupp returning to form after a poor previous outing in Milwaukee. Roupp pitched scoreless innings, striking out two batters in the eighth before being replaced by Tony Vitello after reaching 98 pitches. On the opposing side, Cubs starter Ben Brown pitched five scoreless innings, holding the Giants to one hit and one walk before being replaced by Caleb Thielbar.

The Giants’ offense struggled to generate runs in the tenth, going 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position after a productive series of plays in the ninth. Jung Hoo Lee extended his hitting streak to 14 games with two hits, including a single that contributed to the Giants’ ninth-inning lead, while Bryce Eldridge extended his streak to nine games. Despite these individual efforts, the team could not overcome the deficit once the game extended beyond regulation.

The loss highlights a shift in performance for the Giants, who had previously scored 18 runs in their prior game. The Cubs’ defense, including key plays by Willy Adames and Luis Arraez, helped limit damage during Roupp’s start, while the late-inning error by Bericoto proved costly. The result leaves the Giants without a four-game winning streak and provides a morale boost for Chicago following their extra-inning victory.
