CONCACAF U20 Championship draw places hosts Mexico in Group B with Guatemala, Costa Rica and Antigua and Barbuda

Host nation Mexico has been drawn into Group B for the 2026 CONCACAF U20 Championship, sharing the group with Guatemala, Costa Rica and Antigua and Barbuda. The tournament, staged across Puebla and Mexico City, serves as the primary pathway for four teams to qualify for the 2027 U20 World Cup and one additional spot for the 2028 Olympic Games.
Mexico's group stage fixtures are confirmed, with the opening match against Antigua and Barbuda scheduled for 24 July in Puebla. Subsequent group games will see Mexico face Costa Rica on 27 July and Guatemala on 30 July. The competition will conclude with the semifinals and final moving to Estadio Banorte in Mexico City.
Qualification rules stipulate that the top two teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals. Additionally, the two third-placed teams with the best records will also progress to the next stage. The winners of the quarterfinals will secure their places in the 2027 U20 World Cup, while the final match will determine the Olympic qualifier, provided the host nation, the United States, does not reach the final.
Mexico previously hosted the 2024 CONCACAF U20 Championship in Leon, Guanajuato, where they won the title. However, historical context notes that in 2024, Mexico suffered a significant upset by losing to Guatemala in a penalty shootout during the quarterfinals, missing out on both the World Cup and Olympic spots. In that tournament, Mexico defeated Guatemala 2-1 and Costa Rica 2-1 in the quarterfinals after having faced both nations in the group stage.
In March prior to the 2024 tournament, Mexico defeated Costa Rica twice by 1-0 scores. Antigua and Barbuda last participated in the competition in 2017, where they lost 3-0 to Mexico in their opening match. Despite these historical advantages, analysts suggest Mexico may face a tougher challenge in 2026 compared to 2024 due to a perceived lack of talent in their current squad.
Mexico will play their opening match at Estadio Cuauhtemoc in Puebla. The draw confirms that the hosts were seeded into Group B, differing from their 2024 placement in Group C following their failure to qualify in 2022.
