How Jayden Daniels was involved in Commanders promoting David Blough
Washington front office prioritises structural shift over Kingsbury’s system

The Washington Commanders have elevated David Blough to the role of offensive coordinator, a move that formally ends Kliff Kingsbury’s tenure with the franchise. The decision, executed by head coach Dan Quinn and general manager Adam Peters, signals a deliberate shift away from Kingsbury’s fast-break, no-huddle philosophy toward a more traditional offensive structure. This transition aims to better integrate the running game with the passing attack and reduce the operational burden on quarterback Jayden Daniels.

The restructuring follows a challenging 2025 campaign in which the Commanders finished with a 5-12 record. The season was marred by injuries, with Daniels missing 10 games, and the offence struggling significantly in the absence of a healthy Terry McLaurin. While defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. was also dismissed following the season, the offensive change represents a forward-looking adjustment rather than a reaction solely to recent results. Quinn and Peters identified a ceiling in Kingsbury’s system that persisted regardless of the quarterback’s individual talent.

Blough, a 30-year-old former NFL quarterback, brings a close working relationship with Daniels to the new role. The two have collaborated closely over the past two years, a factor that Quinn cited as instrumental in the decision. Despite Blough having only two years of coaching experience, Quinn had previously labelled him a "future star" when he joined the staff in 2024. The front office viewed Blough as a strategic fit capable of designing an offence that utilises more play-action and positions Daniels more frequently under centre rather than in the shotgun.

Daniels, who enjoyed a historic rookie season in 2024 under Kingsbury, endorsed Blough’s promotion and was consulted during the hiring process. However, the quarterback clarified that the final authority rested with the coaching and management staff. "I would say I was in the loop, but a lot of stuff is above my pay grade," Daniels said. He described the new setup as "fun" and "awesome," praising Blough’s creative approach and the collaborative nature of building the new system during the recent Organized Team Activities.

The Commanders opened their 2026 Organized Team Activities with Blough in his new role, providing the first opportunity to observe the tactical shift. Daniels was seen playing under centre, and teammates noted his command of the new offence. The organisation believes that marrying the running game with the passing game will make Daniels more dangerous in the coming seasons, addressing the limitations that Quinn and Peters identified in the previous offensive scheme.
