Commanders' 2026 Draft Strategy Questioned by Griffin Despite Specific Praise for Roster Depth

Former Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III has publicly questioned the extent to which the Commanders addressed their needs in the 2026 NFL Draft. Speaking on the "Outta Pocket" podcast, Griffin told host Grete Griffin that the franchise did not do enough to assist quarterback Jayden Daniels in getting back on track. While the discussion touched on broader team goals, Griffin specifically framed his critique around the notion of restoring Daniels' career trajectory rather than immediate contention for a Super Bowl or playoff victory.

Despite his reservations regarding the overall strategy, Griffin acknowledged that General Manager Adam Peters executed a competent job in filling specific roster deficiencies. He highlighted three particular selections that he believes address critical gaps within the squad. The former quarterback praised first-rounder Sonny Styles, describing the linebacker as an instant starter and an absolute dog who fits the defensive system of head coach Dan Quinn. Griffin noted Styles' versatility in coverage, pointing out that he allowed only one touchdown in coverage over his last two seasons.

Griffin also commended the selection of Antonio Williams in the third round, characterising the Clemson product as a slot maestro and a ball magnet. He argued that Williams' crafty routes and productivity after the catch would allow Daniels to move the chains quickly. Furthermore, Griffin identified sixth-round pick Kaytron Allen as a dangerous asset who could compete for a roster spot despite the crowded backfield. He noted that Allen, who recorded 15 touchdowns last season, would have been a higher pick had he been available previously and could easily make the team if veterans slip up.

However, Griffin maintained that these individual acquisitions do not solve the primary issue facing the organisation. He stated that the biggest indicator for the Commanders this year is not the depth added through the draft or free agency, but rather the physical health of Jayden Daniels. According to Griffin, if Daniels remains healthy, the team can turn things around regardless of the surrounding roster composition. Conversely, if Daniels is not healthy, the additions made by Peters may not be sufficient to revitalise the franchise's fortunes.

The analysis suggests that while the Commanders have made calculated moves to bolster their roster with players like Styles, Williams, and Allen, the fundamental reliance on Daniels' durability remains the single most important factor for the 2026 season. Griffin's assessment implies that the burden of the team's recovery rests squarely on the quarterback's ability to stay on the field, rather than the depth chart constructed by the front office.
