Colts secure veteran receiver Keenan Allen in reunion with coach Steichen

The Indianapolis Colts have reportedly agreed to terms with wide receiver Keenan Allen, who is set to sign a one-year contract worth up to $8.32 million. The move marks Allen’s return for his 14th NFL season and reunites him with head coach Shane Steichen, with whom he previously worked during their tenure with the Los Angeles Chargers.

According to a report by the IndyStar late on Monday, the agreement addresses immediate depth concerns within the Colts’ receiving corps. Allen joins a group headlined by Josh Downs and Alec Pierce, the latter of whom has been sidelined through the opening weeks of training camp with an ankle injury. The signing follows the departure of Michael Pittman Jr., which left the franchise with limited options at the position.

Allen, 34, is the third franchise stop of his career, having spent the 2024 season with the Chicago Bears and a majority of his tenure with the Chargers. He arrives in Indianapolis with a résumé that includes six Pro Bowl selections and six 1,000-yard receiving seasons. During the 2025 season with the Chargers, Allen recorded 81 receptions for 777 yards and four touchdowns, filling a role that mirrors the expectations for his new team.

The reunion with Steichen is viewed as a strategic fit for the Colts’ offensive structure. The two share a history dating back to when Steichen served as an offensive assistant for the Chargers, later promoting to offensive coordinator in 2020. That season, Allen recorded 100 receptions and eight receiving touchdowns, establishing a productive dynamic that the Colts hope to replicate.

The acquisition aims to stabilise the Colts’ offence following a fifth consecutive playoff miss. By bringing in a veteran who prizes separation at the top of routes and reliable hands, the team hopes to mitigate the impact of Pierce’s absence and provide Steichen with a dependable target in their system.
