Clemson faces US$57m reported buyout if it dismisses Dabo Swinney
Dabo Swinney’s contract runs through 2031, with reported payments applying if either Clemson or the coach ends the agreement.
Clemson would reportedly owe head coach Dabo Swinney US$57 million if it dismissed him without cause in 2026, according to Fox Sports, citing the Greenville News and USA TODAY’s college football coaches salary database.
Swinney signed a 10-year, US$115 million contract with Clemson in September 2022. The agreement runs through 2031, and the reported US$57 million buyout is said to remain in place for the duration of the contract.
The figure is lower than the reported US$60 million Clemson would have owed after the previous season. The terms do not indicate that Clemson intends to dismiss Swinney, who has been the subject of early hot-seat discussion following the team’s 7–6 finish in 2025.
Swinney’s reported salary after the 2025 season was US$11.5 million, the highest in the Atlantic Coast Conference and the fourth-highest in college football. Clemson had gone 10–3 and won the ACC championship in 2024.
If Swinney left for another programme, he would reportedly owe Clemson US$3 million in 2026 or 2027. That amount would fall to US$2 million in 2028 or 2029 and US$1 million in 2030, according to the Greenville News.
A separate Alabama clause would reportedly increase the payment if Swinney left specifically for Alabama. Fox Sports did not provide the precise calculation. Clemson is scheduled to open its 2026 season at No. 11 LSU, in Lane Kiffin’s debut as the Tigers’ head coach.
