Claremore Zebras secure regional berth despite Senior Night defeat to Bartlesville

The Claremore Zebras baseball program has secured its place in the upcoming regional tournament, finishing second in District 5A-3 on tiebreakers despite a 7-1 defeat to the Bartlesville Bruins on Thursday night. The match, played at Legendary Legion Field, featured traditional Senior Night ceremonies honouring eight graduating players, including Tyler Osgood, Lucas Dupont, Gavin Bittle, Ryder Garrison, Saxton Pickup, Luke Roberts, Drew Dipboye, and Gage Graham.

While the scoreboard reflected a loss, the institutional outcome remains a significant achievement for the squad. The Zebras, with a record of 22-11, qualified for the regionals by edging out the district standings, a result that ensures they will host the next phase of competition. The team is expected to open their campaign against McAlester, with potential matchups against Booker T. Washington and Memorial also confirmed for the bracket.

Game action was defined by Bartlesville's early dominance and a decisive fourth inning. The Bruins took control in the second inning and expanded their lead significantly in the fourth, scoring five runs to push the deficit to 6-0. Claremore starter Saxton Pickup allowed five runs over 3 1/3 innings before relief pitchers Gavin Bittle, Ryder Garrison, and Lucas Dupont combined to hold the opposition to a single run in the final three innings.

Claremore managed a solitary run in the bottom of the fifth inning, sparked by a double from senior Tyler Osgood and an RBI single from Xyler Reeder. Bartlesville starter Cooper Swaim went the distance, allowing three hits and one run while striking out three batters. The final score of 7-1 marked a nondistrict loss for the Zebras, though the coaching staff emphasised that the tournament qualification was the primary objective of the evening.

Coach Jonathan Gelnar noted that while the outcome was disappointing, the team's placement in the regionals is a significant achievement for the seniors. He highlighted that many players had spent four years at the club and that their future success extends beyond the sport. The Zebras are now set to face McAlester, a team known for its pitching depth, in their opening regional contest.

The emotional core of the evening was the traditional base-run ceremony, where Osgood and his teammates received messages from their families over the PA system. Osgood described the moment as bittersweet, acknowledging the support of parents who have accompanied them throughout their high school journey. Despite the loss, the focus for the program has shifted to the upcoming regional series, where the Zebras aim to compete for a state berth.
