Kansas City Chiefs tight end Tre Watson has used a recent appearance on the 'Chief Concerns' podcast to address perceptions surrounding the team's roster depth, specifically aiming to counter narratives that the organisation needed to acquire new talent during the offseason. Speaking ahead of training camp, Watson emphasised that the group intends to prove its capabilities and establish individual identities outside of the shadow of Travis Kelce.
Watson noted that external observers often underestimated the existing talent within the tight end room, suggesting that many believed the team required immediate reinforcements once Kelce’s future became a topic of discussion. He stated that the group felt a lack of belief from outside sources, prompting a collective desire to validate their presence on the roster through performance rather than relying on external acquisitions.
The tight end group, which includes Noah Gray, is focused on increasing physicality and competing for roster spots as the team prepares for the upcoming season. Watson highlighted that the room aims to be a "menace" on the field and on film, aligning with instructions from Coach Mel to be a player that opponents dislike facing. This approach involves maintaining intensity after the whistle and ensuring a visible presence on game footage.
Watson, a former Fresno State Bulldog and Texas A&M Aggie, recorded 77 receptions for 872 yards and five touchdowns in 46 collegiate games. He is currently part of the 90-man roster heading into training camp, where he will continue to compete for a position on the depth chart alongside fellow 2025 undrafted tight end Jake Briningstool.
