Chiefs' Rice violates probation, ordered to jail
NFL wide receiver misses team activities after testing positive for marijuana

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice has been ordered to serve 30 days in jail immediately after testing positive for marijuana, a breach of his probation conditions. The Texas State Attorney's Office confirmed the order on Tuesday, citing the violation of his original sentence for a third-degree felony related to racing and causing bodily injury.

Rice was booked into the Dallas County jail at 1:25 p.m. ET and is scheduled for release on June 16. His incarceration means he will miss the Chiefs' organised team activities and mandatory minicamp. The team declined to comment on the case.

The probation violation stems from a 2024 Dallas highway crash involving a Lamborghini Urus SUV driven by Rice and a black Corvette driven by teammate Theodore Knox. The incident occurred on the North Central Expressway, where Rice was travelling at 119 mph. Rice, Knox, and three friends fled the scene on foot without checking on injured parties, an event captured on video.

In July 2024, Rice pleaded guilty to two third-degree felony charges: collision involving serious bodily injury and racing on a highway causing bodily injury. He received deferred adjudication, meaning the case would have been dismissed had he completed probation without violation. The NFL suspended Rice for six games last season for violating the league's personal conduct policy.

A Texas court issued a default judgment of more than $2.8 million against Knox in March. Knox pleaded guilty in August 2025 to the same charges as Rice and received a similar sentence of 30 days in jail and five years of probation. Rice's civil case is scheduled to go to trial on June 9.
