Chiefs’ Mahomes tracking for season opener despite complex knee injury
Kansas City faces compressed recovery window for 2026 opener against Denver as backup Justin Fields prepares for potential start.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is recovering from a season-ending torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and lateral collateral ligament (LCL) in his left knee, sustained in December during a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. The 16-13 defeat eliminated the Chiefs from playoff contention for the first time since 2014, concluding a 6-11 campaign that marked the worst season of the Mahomes era. Mahomes underwent successful surgery the evening of the injury and has since begun intensive rehabilitation.
Chiefs officials report that Mahomes is progressing well, with General Manager Brett Veach stating the three-time Super Bowl winner is "way ahead of schedule." Head Coach Andy Reid confirmed that Mahomes is "making progress," while the player himself noted that his rehabilitation is "going great" as he hits every physical benchmark. The franchise remains hopeful that Mahomes will be cleared in time for training camp to prepare for a full regular season.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter acknowledged the team’s optimism, confirming that Mahomes is tracking to be ready for the 2026 NFL season opener against the Denver Broncos on 14 September. Schefter pointed to Mahomes swinging a golf club at a charity tournament in Las Vegas as a sign of confidence in his knee’s stability, noting that teams typically do not allow quarterbacks recovering from multi-ligament knee surgery to perform such activities unless they are confident in the joint's integrity.
Despite the positive indicators, Schefter cautioned that Mahomes’ status is not 100% certain due to the compressed recovery window. The season opener is less than four months from the time of the injury, whereas a standard ACL recovery typically takes nine to twelve months, and combined ACL and LCL reconstruction is even more complex. Schefter suggested that even if Mahomes returns, there may be an adjustment period regarding his performance levels.
Backup quarterback Justin Fields is expected to start if Mahomes is not fully cleared for the opener. Coach Reid clarified that Fields was acquired to play quarterback, not for trick plays, and will serve as a reliable short-term option. The Chiefs will officially open the 2026 season on Monday Night Football at Arrowhead Stadium, hosting the Broncos in a divisional matchup that serves as a revenge game against the squad that ended their nine-year run as AFC West champions.
