Chelsea’s WSL title credentials tested by Aston Villa draw

Chelsea Women opened their Women’s Super League campaign with a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa, surrendering a late lead after dominating the match and creating a succession of chances.

Lauren James put Chelsea ahead in the 11th minute after capitalising on an error in Villa’s defence. Chelsea finished with 34 shots, including 23 from inside the penalty area, while also hitting the crossbar and having another goal disallowed for offside.

Villa equalised late when Noelle Maritz’s shot ricocheted off goalkeeper Hannah Hampton before Veerle Buurman was credited with an own goal. The result ended Aston Villa’s run of 12 successive league defeats against Chelsea.

Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor said the team needed to sustain its momentum and be more decisive in front of goal. Debutant Katie McCabe similarly told BBC Sport that Chelsea needed to be “more clinical” and said dropping points at home was below the club’s standards.

The result revives concerns that have followed Chelsea’s attack. They were unbeaten and won a treble during Bompastor’s first WSL season in 2024-25, but finished third last season after four draws and three defeats, including a 1-0 loss to Everton despite recording 30 shots.

Chelsea’s attacking depth was also affected by minor injuries to Melvine Malard and Mayra Ramirez. With the season only beginning, the draw does not settle the title race, but it leaves Chelsea needing greater efficiency as rivals begin their campaigns.
