Chelsea pivot to experienced signings as Alonso reshapes recruitment strategy

Chelsea are executing a distinct shift in their recruitment policy, targeting experienced professionals Maxence Lacroix, Jordan Henderson, and Danny Welbeck to complement their existing squad. The move signals a departure from the exclusive focus on youth that characterised the club’s strategy since the 2022 takeover, following what owner Behdad Eghbali described as underwhelming returns on previous high-profile older signings.

The club is reportedly close to finalising a £52m deal for Crystal Palace defender Lacroix. Alongside the 26-year-old French international, Chelsea are pursuing Brighton striker Welbeck, 35, and Brentford midfielder Henderson, 36. This approach contrasts sharply with the club’s recent history, where the last player signed older than Lacroix was Tosin Adaraboyo, who arrived just three months before his 27th birthday.

The strategic pivot follows a period of mixed results for older acquisitions between 2022 and 2026. High-profile signings such as Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang failed to deliver the expected impact. Sterling, who joined for up to £50m, struggled with form and fitness before leaving on a free transfer in January 2026. Similarly, Koulibaly departed after one season, while Aubameyang struggled to secure regular game time under subsequent managers.

Conversely, the club’s investment in younger players has yielded significant returns. Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo, and Cole Palmer have established themselves as key figures, with Caicedo and Palmer ranking among the Premier League’s top performers in their respective categories. However, the club also faced setbacks with younger signings such as Mykhailo Mudryk, Joao Felix, and Wesley Fofana, who have been hampered by disciplinary issues, poor form, or injuries.

Incoming manager Xabi Alonso, who commences his four-year contract on 1 July, is understood to favour a hybrid model. During his tenure at Bayer Leverkusen, Alonso utilised older players effectively, signing four players over the age of 27 in the 2023-24 season and another four the following year. Eghbali stated the club would "tweak" its model to add experience to a core of young players, including Palmer and Caicedo, to address the shortcomings that contributed to a 10th-place finish in the Premier League last season.

Interim manager Calum McFarlane will oversee the final two matches of the season against Tottenham and Sunderland before Alonso officially replaces Liam Rosenior, who was sacked less than a month ago following the club’s defeat in the FA Cup final. The recruitment shift aims to provide the strong personalities and leadership Alonso requires to elevate the squad’s performance in the upcoming campaign.
