Chelsea pivot to experience in Welbeck talks as Alonso reshapes squad
The 35-year-old striker’s potential arrival signals a departure from the club’s previous recruitment philosophy, raising questions for several current forwards.
Chelsea have opened preliminary talks to sign Brighton striker Danny Welbeck, with the 35-year-old reportedly keen to join new manager Xabi Alonso at Stamford Bridge. The move reflects a strategic shift to add experience to the squad, following owner Behdad Eghbali’s comments earlier this year on tweaking the club’s youth-focused model.
Welbeck scored a career-high 13 league goals for Brighton last season, bringing his total to 51 goals in 201 matches since joining from Watford in 2020. He signed a 12-month contract extension in March, keeping him at Brighton until the end of the 2026-27 season. The Blues are looking for experience because of an acceptance that their model of signing young players needs a "tweak" - according to influential owner Behdad Eghbali in April - and Welbeck could be a good fit.
The signing may impact the futures of forwards Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap, and Emmanuel Emegha. Joao Pedro is regarded as the club's first-choice option, but the arrival of Welbeck would leave Chelsea with an abundance of attacking options despite not being involved in European competition. At his age, Welbeck may be content to provide cover for Joao Pedro, but the move would represent bad news for several other forwards.
Jackson, who has returned from a loan spell at Bayern Munich, is open to leaving amid interest from Aston Villa. Delap, who joined for £30m from Ipswich Town a year ago, is increasingly expected to depart. There is also uncertainty surrounding the future of Dutch striker Emegha, despite having only recently joined Chelsea from Strasbourg, a club within the same ownership group. Marc Guiu is understood to be available for a permanent transfer or a loan move, with Chelsea valuing him at about £25m.
Chelsea have already signed club-record £117m attacker Morgan Rogers and full-back Marco Palestra, and are closing in on a £52m deal for Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix. The move for Welbeck follows attempts to sign 33-year-old midfielder Granit Xhaka from Sunderland, with the Black Cats refusing to sell the Switzerland captain. The Chelsea manager is getting what he wants: experience and strong personalities to address shortcomings that contributed to the team's 10th-place finish in the Premier League last season.
