Chelsea break British transfer record with £117m Morgan Rogers acquisition
The 23-year-old England international signs a seven-year deal at Stamford Bridge, surpassing the previous British record held by Enzo Fernandez.
Chelsea have completed the signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for a club-record fee of £117 million, marking a significant escalation in the club’s summer recruitment strategy. The 23-year-old England international has signed a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge, overtaking the previous British transfer record of £107 million paid for Enzo Fernandez in 2023.
The acquisition was secured ahead of rivals Arsenal, who had been in advanced talks with the player and were considered favourites. Chelsea moved swiftly to finalise the deal on Saturday, leveraging relationships between co-owner Behdad Eghbali and Aston Villa owner Nassef Sawiris. A primary factor in Rogers’ decision was the opportunity to work under new manager Xabi Alonso, who was appointed on a four-year contract effective from 1 July.
Rogers becomes Chelsea’s fourth signing of the window, following the arrivals of Marco Palestra, Emmanuel Emegha, and Geovany Quenda. The deal represents a distinct shift in policy for Chelsea owners BlueCo, moving away from a previous focus on exclusively signing young, untested players. Co-owner Behdad Eghbali has indicated that the club is targeting established talent to challenge for titles, a strategic adjustment following a campaign where the team finished 10th and were eliminated in the Champions League last 16 by Paris Saint-Germain.
The England international arrives with recent experience on the global stage, having started in the semi-final defeat to Argentina and the third-place playoff victory over France at the World Cup. At Aston Villa, Rogers scored 31 times in 125 appearances under manager Unai Emery, contributing to a top-four league finish and a run to the Europa League final. His previous move from Middlesbrough in January 2024 for a fee rising to £15 million included a 20 per cent sell-on clause, meaning the Teesside club will receive a portion of the current transfer fee.
Chelsea’s recruitment drive has been characterised by high-value interventions, though not all have succeeded. In June, the club failed to secure Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka, declining to meet the Black Cats’ valuation. The signing of Rogers, described as a versatile forward capable of multiple attacking roles, is viewed as the club’s most significant buy since Cole Palmer’s departure from Manchester City in 2023, signalling a renewed ambition to compete at the highest level under Alonso’s leadership.
