Chelsea appoint Xabi Alonso as manager on four-year deal
Alonso departs Real Madrid to take charge at Stamford Bridge, succeeding Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior in a move aimed at restoring consistent top-level competition.

Chelsea have officially confirmed the appointment of Xabi Alonso as their new manager, with the 44-year-old signing a four-year contract effective from the start of next season. The former Liverpool midfielder arrives at Stamford Bridge after departing Real Madrid by mutual consent earlier this season, bringing with him a reputation for high-performance management established during his tenure at Bayer Leverkusen.
Alonso, who previously led Leverkusen to an unbeaten league campaign, stated that his decision to join Chelsea was driven by a shared vision with the club’s leadership. He described the appointment as a source of immense pride, noting that conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership revealed aligned ambitions to build a squad capable of competing consistently at the highest level and contesting for trophies.
The appointment follows a turbulent period for the club, which began the current campaign under Enzo Maresca before transitioning to Liam Rosenior for what has been described as an ill-fated spell. Following Chelsea’s defeat in the FA Cup final on Saturday, the club is now looking toward a fresh start, with Alonso emphasising the need for hard work, cultural development, and the utilisation of existing talent within the squad.
Current caretaker manager Calum McFarlane will oversee the final two fixtures of the Premier League season before Alonso assumes his permanent duties in July. McFarlane is set to manage the home match against Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday, followed by an away game against Sunderland on the final day of the season, providing a transitional period before the new regime begins.
Alonso’s arrival marks a significant shift in Chelsea’s strategic direction, aiming to capitalise on the club’s potential and restore its status among elite European contenders. The four-year deal signals a long-term commitment to stability, with the club hoping Alonso’s experience and tactical acumen will translate into sustained success in domestic and international competitions.
