Chargers secure veteran tight end David Njoku in one-year deal

The Los Angeles Chargers have agreed to a one-year contract with veteran tight end David Njoku, valuing the deal at up to $8 million. This agreement, confirmed by sources speaking to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, marks the end of Njoku's nine-season tenure with the Cleveland Browns. The 29-year-old, who is entering his 10th NFL season in 2026, leaves Cleveland to join the offence of quarterback Justin Herbert.

Njoku had previously ruled out a return to the Browns in early February, stating it was time to find a new home. His previous contract with the Cleveland Browns was officially voided on 10 February, clearing the way for this new institutional arrangement. The move represents a shift in personnel strategy for Los Angeles, leveraging Njoku's career-best 2023 Pro Bowl season to provide another target for the franchise quarterback.

While Njoku posted career highs in 2023 with 81 receptions, 882 yards, and six touchdowns, his recent form has been hampered by injuries. The past two seasons, 2024 and 2025, limited him to 11 and 12 games respectively. In the 2025 season specifically, he recorded 33 catches for 293 yards and four touchdowns, with an average of 8.9 yards per reception, which was his lowest output since 2019.

Upon joining the Chargers, Njoku enters a tight end group that includes rising second-year player Oronde Gadsden II, Charlie Kolar, Tanner McLachlan, and Thomas Yassmin. The roster also features undrafted rookies Evan Svoboda and Jarand Bradley, creating a mix of veteran experience and youthful development within the unit.

The transaction underscores the Chargers' approach to roster construction, prioritising scheme compatibility and veteran experience despite the voiding of the previous contract in Cleveland. As the club finalises the deal, the focus remains on how this acquisition integrates with the existing personnel to support the offensive strategy under Herbert.
