Cecil Baldwin calls for tech reforms and uninterrupted credits
Baldwin advocates for mandatory phone features to prevent texting while driving and urges streaming services to halt automatic playback after film credits.

Cecil Baldwin, best known as the voice of Cecil Palmer in the long-running fiction podcast Welcome to Night Vale, has outlined several technology pet peeves in a recent interview with The Verge. The actor and podcaster, who also cohosts Random Number Generator Horror Podcast No. 9 with co-creator Jeffrey Cranor, used the platform to discuss smartphone safety, streaming habits, and his methods for overcoming creative stagnation.
Baldwin expressed strong support for stricter smartphone safety features, specifically calling for devices to make manual texting while driving impossible. He noted that current user behaviour falls short of safety standards, stating, "We are collectively way worse at it than we think." His remarks highlight a growing demand for hardware-level interventions to curb distracted driving, a persistent issue in road safety policy.
Beyond driving safety, Baldwin voiced frustration with the current user experience on streaming platforms and in cinemas. He advocated for the ability to watch film credits without interruption, arguing that audiences need time to process the content they have just consumed. "I just finished a movie, you don’t need to roll me right into a whole new one," he said, emphasising the need for a pause to "digest" the narrative before being forced into the next title.
When addressing creative blocks or the urge to engage in social media "scroll-frenzy," Baldwin employs a simple physical intervention. He counts to five aloud and then physically walks away from the task or device. He describes this ritual as an "unbinding" technique that helps him disengage from unproductive habits and refocus on other activities until he is ready to return to his work.
Baldwin also highlighted his continued preference for physical media, listing recent purchases of vinyl albums by Marianne Faithfull, Jorge Ben Jor, and Dr John. He described a specific purchasing habit where he adds books to his Amazon "Favorite" list to track titles and authors, before visiting local new or used bookstores to buy them. The interview excerpt concludes with an unanswered question regarding the tagline for his biopic.
