CBS Sports ranks Johnson and Jones as top American UFC fighters ahead of White House event
Demetrious Johnson and Jon Jones lead the list, which prioritises UFC-specific accomplishments and legacy while excluding pre-UFC achievements.

CBS Sports has published a definitive ranking of the top 25 American fighters in UFC history, a list timed to coincide with the upcoming UFC Freedom 250 event at the White House. The publication seeks to identify the most significant American combat sports figures, with the ranking methodology prioritising UFC-specific accomplishments, career peaks, legacy, and innovation.
Demetrious Johnson occupies the number one position on the list, followed by Jon Jones at number two. The ranking criteria explicitly exclude fighters whose primary achievements occurred outside the UFC, meaning notable figures such as Dan Henderson did not make the cut despite their broader historical significance in mixed martial arts.
The methodology also accounts for significant career downswings and drug test failures. Johnson’s top placement is attributed to his record of 11 consecutive title defenses in the flyweight division, a run described as untouchable and free from the external controversies that have affected other contenders. Jones, despite his dominance and 12 combined title defenses, is ranked second due to a legacy tainted by drug test failures and outside-the-Octagon issues.
Other high-profile inclusions reflect the strict adherence to UFC-centric metrics. Daniel Cormier is ranked highly despite arguments that he was not the best fighter in his divisions, with his placement influenced by his title wins in both light heavyweight and heavyweight categories. Similarly, Randy Couture features prominently due to his five total championships and tournament victories across multiple weight classes.
The list also highlights fighters who defined specific eras within the promotion. Dan Severn is recognised for bringing elite amateur wrestling to the early UFC, while Chuck Liddell is noted for his unorthodox striking and role in the light heavyweight division's popularity. The rankings aim to balance historical impact with the specific constraints of the Octagon, offering a structured view of American combat sports history ahead of the White House celebrations.
